Food

The garden is giving us plenty to eat, I’m really pleased with it this year. I’m not an expert so haven’t got much to say about it, except it’s delicious – and free πŸ˜€ Some things won’t be ready for a while but here’s a few snaps of some of our pickings so far. We have strawberries, mini cucumbers, courgettes, salad leaves, shallots, beetroot and onions.

Around The Garden

My blanket has been put to one side for now, it’s too warm to have it on my lap while I work on it. I’ve been spending a lot of time outside instead, walking and gardening. The garden gave us lots of lovely food for a few years but for the past two years, things just didn’t grow properly, or at all. This year, it’s back to it’s productive self πŸ˜€

We have a lilac tree, which grew from a stray root from the garden over the back, the scent is amazing. There’s a Californian lilac too. The flowers don’t last long on either of them but they look great while they last. There are lots of pots with various flowers. I have no idea what most of them are, Mr MB knows all about them but I choose seeds and plants by looking at them (or the picture on the packet) and saying β€œthat one is pretty, let’s get that”.

The salad leaves and strawberries are almost ready, my tomato plants are on the small side but Scampi has been ‘helping’ me with them so I’m sure they’ll be fine! My little Christmas tree is growing well, my first proper strawberry patch looks great and the veg patch is overflowing – we put raised beds in to keep it a bit tidier (and make weeding easier) but it’s still out of control πŸ˜€

As we prune things, we throw the bits into the chicken run, the girls have a great time picking off leaves and searching for bugs.

And my Easter cactus has finally flowered!

Sunshine!

I’m sure we’ve had all four seasons in just one month – snow, rain, mist, frost and a bit of sun. But yesterday was like mid-summer! The back of the house was too hot, I had to close the curtains to keep the rooms cool. I was brave enough to open the front downstairs windows a bit. Scampi usually throws a tantrum when he hears someone outside the house, even if it’s someone just quietly walking past. But he’s been quite calm lately and after a bit of growling he seemed to finally realise that we aren’t constantly under attack and settled down to relax the sun.

Nervous, but NOT running away from another dog at the park. He even went to meet her a couple of minutes later and played for a short while.

The chickens are happy that their run is dry and are celebrating by tucking into a big breakfast πŸ˜€

The blossom is blooming on the cherry tree, the garlic and onions are growing and my Easter cactus has decided to flower. Just buds at the moment but I wasn’t expecting any colour at all this year so I’m thrilled with this little display of pink!

Spring

We had more snow over the weekend. This was my garden at 7am on Sunday morning.Β  There are flattened, buried mini daffodils to the right of the path

Early morning

The chickens refused to leave their shed

These are the daffodils three days later. Just 8 inches tall and they refused to let snow defeat them

The chickens have started laying again and I have customers waiting for their eggs. Oh I do love a few extra pennies in my pocket πŸ˜€

Pottering

I’m still waiting for extra electrical sockets to be added to my room. Perfectly happy to wait (well maybe not perfectly happy, more it’s a freebie so I don’t mind too much) but the thing I worried about is starting to happen – things are starting to appear in there – β€œI’ll just put this in the spare room for now”. It’s not a spare room, it’s my room and actually it’s not a room, it’s a beach hut! I’ve started sneaking things out of there and putting them where they belong – most things need to go back to the shed, where they already have a home. I think Mr MB sees it as an extension to the shed, I really need to change his view on that!

So I’ve just been pottering about for the past few weeks, picking up crafty things and putting them back down again, not really knowing what to do with them because they’re not in any sort of order – they’ve been piled up ready to move upstairs so instead of looking and choosing, I’ve had to dig through it all and it’s hard work, lol.

We’ve had fun in the snow. Scampi was having fun, I promise – he stopped and posed for this photo! The chickens insisted on trying to get to their buried feeders, even though I’d put a few bowls of food and water in their run

Settling Down

My new routine is working well, though there are many Interruptions By Dog πŸ˜€ He’s a little star most of the time but sometimes decides to help with my crochet. It’s entertaining(!) when he decides that my hook is a stick and my yarn is a ball. And he likes to steal yarny flowers. I’m not bothered about keeping yarn away from him when I’m making things for myself, but the supplies for anything I want to sell have be in a fur-free zone. So I now have two areas for making and stashing. It means hooky progress has slowed down a bit, but it’s still progress and that’s OK. For a while I found myself rushing from one thing to the next without really thinking – ‘must clean the chicken shed, oh damn I forgot to water the tomatoes, that blanket has be ready in two days and I’m nowhere near finished…..’ etc. I’ve made time for everything and things are much easier to manage. I’ve even remembered to take photos of things as I go πŸ˜€

Caught up!

I’ve been playing catch-up, and now I’ve finally caught up! Scampi Dog has settled really well even though we had a week in Cornwall WITHOUT HIM. I didn’t want to leave him but it couldn’t be helped, he had a great time in boarding though – lots of play, cuddles and treats. I won’t be leaving him again, next time he’s coming with us πŸ™‚ I don’t have to watch his every move now, he’ll happily trot off down the garden for a snooze in his favourite spot, or entertain himself with sticks and a Kong (and the occasional flower pot!). Still loves lots of attention though πŸ˜€

The garden is tidy and the veg is growing well. I managed to pick just under 3lb of unripened cherries before the birds stole them all

cherries

I sowed four cucumber seeds, three died so I bought a few plants. They died too, so I’m only left with one. It’s growing really slowly, I’m not sure I’ll get any fruit. My raspberries haven’t produced anything either.

I have some lovely strawberries, and the plants have been busy sending out runners. I straightened(ish) out some paper clips then bent them in half to use as anchors until the new plants have rooted

I haven’t crocheted anything – I almost did, then didn’t! I wanted to get the house and garden sorted properly then change our routine slightly. It’s working quite well, though it needs tweaking a bit. I’ve allowed plenty of time for yarn play πŸ˜€
