A Good Weekend

The blackbirds have been busy stealing our cherries. We decided to pick the remaining ones even though they’re not ripe yet. They’re spread out on a tray in the vain hope that they’ll ripen in the next few days

Miss MB’s blanket will be finished soon, the squares are all done and I’m working on the border

The chickens are being generous, we’re getting 7-9 eggs per day at the moment

We visited friends yesterday, I had no idea they made such a variety of drinks! It’s quite funny, they don’t drink much themselves but they love making it for presents. Our visit was supposed to be a quick cup of tea but it ended up being a rather fab wine tasting session 😀 They sent us home with presents 😀

Elderflower Champagne

Here’s the recipe

Day one

KONICA MINOLTA DIGITAL CAMERA

I planned on taking a photo every day to show how quickly it ferments.  Days two and three looked exactly the same as day one so I deleted the photos from my camera and didn’t bother with days four and five.  I think the water may have been too hot and the yeast was killed off.  A quick dash to the local shop soon fixed that, a pinch of dried yeast and 24 hours later, it was back on track.  We have 13 bottles of lovely fizz (12 1/2 now – well I had to do a taste test!).  I’m still worried about explosions so the bottles are in a strong box on sturdy shelving.  At least if we have another disaster, damage will be contained 😀

This post is much shorted than planned, it needs more photos!  Here’s a few more of the garden.

The mint was spreading like wildfire, so we dug it up and got rid of most of it, saving some to keep in a pot

Our first broad bean!

The blueberry bush, which hasn’t grown since we bought it last year.  I’ve counted, we should get nine berries! lol

Elderflowers And Mushrooms

Sunshine and blooming elderflowers, both at the same time 😀 Time for some elderflower champagne.  We already had white wine vinegar and sugar in the cupboard, we just needed to buy the lemons and pick the flowers. Last year, we added yeast but it really wasn’t needed – there was far too much pressure and there were quite a few exploding bottles. The shed smelled lovely for weeks 😀 We use the River Cottage recipe, it’s lovely.

Here we are, Day One. I’m a bit worried, it’s supposed to be a lighter colour than this!

I’m working on blankets at the moment and they’ve got to the stage where I have to have them on my lap, it’s been too hot for that so I whipped up a little mushroom. I made it up as I went and can’t remember what I did – MUST WRITE THINGS DOWN 😀 He’s 2.5” tall and 2.5” across at the top

Too hot…..

….. to do anything 😀

I’ve spent the past few days either lounging about or asleep!  I’ve done the have-to’s – keeping the animals clean, fed and watered but that’s about it.  Oh, and we nipped out for half an hour to pick the remaining elderflowers, they’re brewing now.

A couple of bottles of elderflower champagne exploded in the shed the other day.

I applied for a Booker’s cash and carry card last week, we visited on friday.  Some things work out really cheap, others are cheaper to buy in Morrison’s.  I was sensible, Mr MB was not!  Here’s his purchases –

All chickens are now happy with their new perch.  Actually when they all tried to get on, we realised it wasn’t long enough so we built them an extension.
